South West / Wales Drive Out

Post  tashuka on Mon Mar 30, 2009 1:38 pm

After a last minute decision, and a prompt from a lotus friend on Facebook, we decided to join the Welsh lot for a drive out to the Brecons. Starting at the Ty-nant inn in Morganstown just out side Cardiff, we were the first ones there, and praying we were in the right place, then slowly the Elise's trickled in.

We were told that last time they went on this route through the Brecon Beacons that the two Porches didn't make it to the first meeting point after finding hedges in the first sector lol. Luckily enough the weather was with us and none of the porches found any hedges. The first part of the run took us up the valley road to some stunning views at Storey Arms, and we saw everyone out, bikers more classic cars, and some skylines or Datsuns lol.

After we followed to the leaders in the first sector, we lost the pack after a wrong turn, luckily we weren't the only ones, and got our selves back on track after crossing a very very very narrow bridge, made of wooden planks. They had all waited somewhere on the Welsh roads, so then we hit the halt for lunch at Bedliffa, The 100mph House Inn. After a quick glance at the SatNav, a more appropriate route was planned back home for us, as back to Cardiff was a bit too far. So we left the pack and discovered some more amazing rounds on our way back. Looking at the mileometer, we were amazed to see 150 miles covers. After a shattering day in the sun, not to mention getting up to watch the F1 first, plus the changing of the clocks we collapsed on the sofa around 5 o'clock lol.

The roads were great, infact even though I have been up the Brecon Beacons many times, it was the first time id been on the main valley road up from the South and the B roads in the Beacons National Park were lovely and quiet, quick and bendy. Was a great chance to see how the Elan was performing after the winter break and once again put a huge smile on ones face lol.

Sorry Paul, truth was it wasn't posted, we only found out about it the night before and said we would go if we managed to get up to watch the F1 first and the weather was nice. It was a run out that the South Wales monthly meet group do every now and again, starting from the Ty-nant Pub in Cardiff. Although the monthly meet is a joint LDC / Club Lotus gathering, Tash and I were the only ones there solely from LDC. The route directions were easy and clear (even though we got lost) and the roads were swift, fun and suprisingly empty. I will be up for the next run they do and will post it in advance next time. Social drive outs are perhaps something we ought to offer to do more, especially if organised by area co-ordinators / online?

I was going to say you need to speak to Tash about that one. The art of holding camera still whilst being chucked around Welsh roads lol. I adore the photos she gets on the cars close up with all the curves and colours of the cars, very good.
